Why the Increasing Demand for Electronic Results to Physicians?

In April 2004, and every year since, President George W. Bush has called for widespread use of health information technology (HIT), and set the goal of providing most Americans with electronic health records within the next decade, by 2014.
One of the key actions indicated by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONCHIT) to move the nation toward the President’s goal was the private sector certification of health information technology products. To that end, the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT) was created.
Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems are actively incorporating the ability to interface effectively as they continue efforts towards becoming CCHIT certified. Physician offices, therefore, are actively adopting EMR systems to help meet that goal. In the process, they often approach their radiology or laboratory service providers to send electronic results to their new EMR.
As an independent laboratory or imaging center, sending electronic results or reports to referring physicians and clients is absolutely crucial in moving towards the initiative of a complete electronic health record and achieving healthcare integration.
